Dr Kevin Stewart

Prior to joining HSIB, Kevin was Director of the Clinical Effectiveness and Evaluation Unit at the Royal College of Physicians in London, where he led national clinical audits, databases, quality improvement and patient safety work. His clinical background is in geriatric medicine, which he still practices part time in Winchester. He was Medical Director and Deputy CEO of the acute trust in Winchester until 2009, then spent a year as a Health Foundation Quality Improvement Fellow at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement in Boston. Whilst in the US he undertook a master’s degree in public health at Harvard.

  • A safe space for learning: Analysing the practical outcomes of the recent HSIB investigation recommendations and how it is eliminating adverse consequences for patients;
  • Meaningful Safety Action: Encouraging further development of mechanisms for detecting and flagging issues and ensuring that learning is shared across the whole healthcare system;
  • Designing and refining safe systems: Reviewing how HSIB is influencing the NHS system and changing the approach to clinical training, pathway design, culture, skills of trust boards, inspection regime and the regulation of organisations and professions.
